I want to start off this rant by explaining something: I like both Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. They were both incredibly talented bands that did a lot for music and created some great records in their day. I am not saying that either band sucks or that either band is worthless. Get that through your heads now instead of bitching about it later.
With that said, I do have some qualms with both of those bands, mostly how they’re portreyed in public opinion as two bands that are completely and unquestionably great bands that if you don’t like them, you do not know anything about music. This idea has began that both bands are so totally untouchable that no music will ever compare to either of them, and to put it simply, it’s not fucking true, and if you think that it is, then you’re fucking retarded, plain and simple. To put it this way: saying Pink Floyd is your favorite band is like saying that The Da Vinci Code is your favorite book. Enough said.
There’s not a single band in the history of music that has an absolutely perfect track record, and honestly, Pink Floyd and Zeppelin aren’t even close. The only bands I can think of coming close are Neutral Milk Hotel, Vashti Bunyan, and Nick Drake. And each of them only recorded 2-3 albums. Notice a pattern there?
Saying that Pink Floyd is unfuckwithable is ignoring how bad Music From the Film More, The Wall, The Final Cut, The Division Bell, and A Momentary Laspe in Reason are. Going along with this crap about how Zeppelin is the best band of all time is ignoring the later, pretentious years, or how overblown and overrated “Stairway to Heaven” is. It’s kind of like those people who love The Simpsons and refuse to acknowledge how bad season 11 is.
I can understand how it happened. Two bands are super-popular and sell millions of records at an almost unheard of pace. Said bands break up, and critics who have a thing for nostalgia begin writing yearly articles about Dark Side of the Moon and how it’s better than anything else to ever exist. Then, young impressionable kids trying to look cool begin wearing t-shirts with the cover of Dark Side of the Moon on them, and this hipster obsession with the band begins to blossom. Finally, this hipster obsession evolves into a strange cultism that makes it so the band is unallowed to be critcized in any way, or else the person who did the criticizing is considered a blasphamous bastard.
This is why it always annoys me when someone lists their favorite bands as “Floyd, Zeppelin, the Who, and Hendrix”. While all great artists, does anyone else see the incredibly narrow view of music coming from that statement? It’s almost like they watched a VH1 special about the 100 Greatest Bands Of All Time List of the Week or whatever and decided to blindly start calling every band listed their favorite without thinking or trying to discover new music for themselves.
As for the idea that music will never be as good as it was when Floyd and Zeppelin were around, bullshit. Bullshit. I’ll say it again in case you missed it: bull…what was it again? Nevertheless, it’s not true. Music is always a mixture of gold and crap, and it always will be. You just have to know where to look. Sure, all music today will appear to suck if you’re just listening to the radio, but once you get beyond crap like Rhianna and the Jonas Brothers, there’s a whole world of music to be discovered. Open your eyes, get some variety, and stop letting VH1 Classic dictate your music tastes.
Also, while we’re at it, can I please ask everyone to stop talking about how awesome Dark Side of the Moon is? As a Pink Floyd fan, that irritates the fuck out of me, because Dark Side really isn’t their best album at all. Seriously, why do people ignore Meddle, Animals, Atom Heart Mother, or my personal favorite, Piper at the Gates of Dawn? Just because Dark Side sold more copies doesn’t make it their best album. Album sales do not equal quality. Need I say it again? Nah, I’m too lazy. I’m going to bed.
